2 Bar Boost Stage 3 BMW MG1CS003 B48 320I

BMW’s B48 comes with a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder engine. This engine is quite new compared to the N20 engine. However, the B48 comes with different power output versions, like the 20i, 25i, and 30i. Furthermore, there’s a 35i (found in the m235i) available which gives the maximum power for this platform.

The B engine platform from BMW is designed to be modular. This means that BMW aims to reduce costs by sharing parts and design structures between the variety of engine models. For example, the B58 (inline 6-cylinder petrol engine) shares the same engine materials & housing as the diesel inline 6-cylinder (B57). A huge build-up of compression in diesel engines is needed to ignite the air/fuel mixture, whereas on petrol engines a sparkplug is used to ignite the air/fuel mixture.

The B platform engines come with the new BOSCH MG1 (petrol) MD1 (diesel) ECUs.

One of our customers asked us to work on a stage 3 project. Details about the car you can find below:
VehicleProducer = BMW
VehicleSeries = 3-series
VehicleBuild = 320i
VehicleModel = B48
VehicleModelyear = 2019
Userdef1 = Autotuner
Userdef2 = obd_virtual
EcuUse = Engine
EcuProducer = Bosch
EcuBuild = MG1CS003
EngineType = Turbo-Petrol
EngineDisplacement = 2.0
EngineTransmission = ZF8HP
OutputPS = 184.0
OutputKW = 135.3

The car came to us with:
1. Engine rebuild forged CP pistons an forged rods
2.Pureboost Big Turbo
3.Big intake cooler
4.High flow intake
5.Snow performance Meth kit
6.Full racing exhaust

The gearbox was already tuned. Keep in mind it is most of the time needed to adjust the software inside the gearbox. The torque limits are very important in the gearbox. By increasing the torque limits the TCU and ECU can calculate for example the correct clutch clamp pressure.

After several test files we ended up with 2 bar boost, see log below. However, there was a knock registration at 5471 rpm, due to using lower-quality octane fuel for this particular file.

Due to the limitation of quality octane fuel we ended up with a version(we adjusted the timing) which produced a little bit less boost without any knock registration during our logging session.

Our customer did not dyno the files we provided him, when we have a dyno graph we will update this post.
