Technical Description of OBD-II Trouble Code
Performance Issue in Engine Positions System Bank 1
What does that signify?
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code that is applicable to OBD-II equipped vehicles, including but not limited to Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet, etc.
Although it is a generic code, the specific repair steps may vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle.
This source provides a comprehensive description of the P0008 code:
"The Engine Control Module (ECM) tests for misalignment between both camshafts on one bank of the engine and the crankshaft. The misalignment may occur at an idler sprocket for either bank or at the crankshaft. Once the ECM determines the position of both camshafts on one bank of the engine, it compares the learned values to a reference value. The ECM will set a DTC if both learned values for one bank of the engine exceed a calibrated threshold in the same direction."
This code is more commonly found in Suzuki, GM, Cadillac, Buick, and Holden vehicles. In fact, there are service bulletins for certain GM vehicles, and the recommended solution is to replace timing chains (including engines such as 3.6 LY7, 3.6 LLT, or 2.8 LP1). This DTC may also appear in a vehicle that has other related DTCs such as P0009, P0016, P0017, P0018, and P0019. Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine that contains cylinder #1.

Possible Solutions
If your vehicle is still covered by powertrain warranty, it is recommended to have the dealer perform the necessary repairs. Generally, diagnosing and resolving this DTC will involve inspecting the timing chains and tensioners for excessive wear or misalignment, as well as checking the positioning of the crank reluctor wheel. Replacement of parts may be required. As mentioned earlier, there are known issues with certain GM engines, so there may be updated or revised replacement parts available. For more specific troubleshooting steps based on your vehicle’s make and model, please refer to the factory service manual.
Professional Service
While we always recommend seeking mechanical solutions for this issue, if it is not feasible for any reason, we offer the option to permanently delete this specific DTC. All other codes will continue to function normally. If you are interested in this option, please upload your ECU file to our portal.
