P0780 Shift Malfunction

Technical Description of OBD-II Trouble Code

Shift Malfunction

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code that applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles from various manufacturers such as Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes, VW, etc. While it is a generic code, the specific repair steps may vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle.

What does that mean?

In my personal experience, when a code P0780 is stored, it indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a problem with the automatic transmission shifting. This code can be caused by either a mechanical or electronic malfunction, but it is limited to vehicles with automatic transmissions.

In OBD-II equipped vehicles, the automatic transmissions are controlled by the PCM or a stand-alone transmission control module (TCM). The transmission controller uses input signals from various engine and transmission sensors to calculate the transmission shift strategy. It then activates electronic solenoid valves, allowing high-pressure fluid to flow into the appropriate hydraulic circuit in the valve body, enabling the transmission to upshift or downshift as needed.

A powerful pump, integrated into the transmission housing and driven by the engine, creates the hydraulic pressure required for smooth and efficient shifting. The transmission controller regulates the pressure through an electronic pressure regulator, which is monitored by the transmission pressure sensor and temperature sensor. These sensors help the controller make necessary adjustments to maintain proper hydraulic pressure.

The transmission controller compares input signals from the input speed sensor and output speed sensor to determine if the transmission is shifting efficiently. If the PCM detects improper shifting, it stores a P0780 code and may illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). In some models, the MIL may require multiple drive cycles to illuminate, initially appearing as a pending code.

Symptoms & Severity

A P0780 transmission shift malfunction code should be addressed urgently. If left unattended for an extended period, a minor condition could escalate into a catastrophic one.

Symptoms of a P0780 code may include:

  • Erratic transmission shift patterns
  • Delayed transmission engagement
  • Harsh transmission shifts (especially if the controller is in limp-in mode)
  • Transmission slippage
  • Whining noise from the transmission pump
  • Causes

Possible causes for this code to be set are:

  • Shorted or open circuits in the transmission control harness
  • Low transmission fluid
  • Outdated or burnt transmission fluid
  • Defective shift solenoid/s
  • Faulty input or output speed sensors
  • Malfunctioning electronic pressure regulator
  • Failed transmission pump
  • Mechanical failure, including torque converter failure, clutch failure, or wear/breakage of internal components
  • Defective PCM or PCM programming error
  • Diagnostic and Repair Procedures

To diagnose a code P0780, you will need a diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), a transmission pressure gauge, and a vehicle service manual (or All Data DIY).

Start by visually inspecting the transmission and all related wiring harnesses. Pay close attention to wiring near hot exhaust components and sharp edges. Keep in mind that a portion of the transmission control harness is located inside the transmission case, so you may need to inspect it when entering the transmission housing for other purposes. Interior transmission harnesses are prone to failure due to harsh temperatures and sharp edges within the automatic transmission.

Connect the scanner to the vehicle diagnostic connector and retrieve the stored codes. Write down the codes and any related freeze frame data, then clear them from the PCM memory.

Since this code can be caused by either an electronic or mechanical malfunction, inspect the transmission, transmission cooler, and transmission cooling lines for signs of leakage. Low transmission fluid can cause slipping, improper shifting, and delayed engagement. These conditions can contribute to the code being stored. If the transmission is slipping and there is delayed engagement (with normal fluid level), check if the fluid smells and looks burnt. Burnt fluid indicates mechanical transmission failure, requiring a rebuild with a new torque converter and cooler.

If the transmission fluid is significantly low (more than 2 quarts), locate and repair the leak. Refill the transmission with the recommended fluid and test drive the vehicle to see if the problem persists and the code is reset. If the code is reset, use the transmission pressure gauge to check pump pressure. If the pump has been operated without enough fluid, it may be damaged, resulting in low pressure that requires a transmission overhaul.

If symptoms are limited to failed shift function, suspect a defective wiring harness or shift solenoid. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for testing transmission control wiring and shift solenoids.

    Additional diagnostic notes:

  • Some models may require replacing all shift solenoids at once. If applicable to your vehicle, replace the solenoid bundle without attempting to pinpoint the faulty solenoid.
  • Electrical malfunctions often lead to transmission rebuilds when a P0780 code is stored.

While we always recommend addressing this issue through mechanical means, if that is not possible, we offer the option to permanently delete this specific DTC. All other codes will continue to function. If you are interested in this option, please upload your ECU file to our portal.
